I never said poor people do not have other options besides the military for education. There are always other options. But for some poor people the military may be their best option.

We are very lucky here in Alberta and in Canada regarding student loans etc. Not all countries or provinces are so generous when it comes to student loans or grants. Although, those loans/grants become much more easy to obtain if you don't mind waiting 3+ years following high school when the expectation that your parents will help you with post secondary education is no longer there. If you wish to travel out of province or out of the country to go to school those loans become much more difficult to obtain and much smaller.

In addition, some educational institutions are outrageously expensive. Nursing back in the 80's was not one of those. In particular nursing schools. The tuition fees were cheap in comparison to universities and colleges and the residence fees were ridiculously low. Unfortunately, they have done away with that avenue into nursing. The cost of post secondary education is continually rising and for some people it is now out of reach regardless of how hard they are willing to work after school, on weekends and during the summers.

Not only is the cost rising but our society is raising the standards. We are expecting more and more from people regarding higher education. We want more credentials, more degrees, more certificates, more education to do the same job someone else did 20yrs ago with a 2 yr college diploma. Pretty soon you're going to need a 4 yr degree to work at MacDonalds.

The secondary education in some countries is very expensive... especially in the United States. AT any rate I don't think we can compare someone growing up in a poor family in Canada to someone in a drug infested slum neighborhood deep in New York or Chicago. I know nothing of what i'm talking about here except what i see in movies and on tv. I do know that there are Americans that have never had anyone in their family ever go to college and the idea is not even remotely possible if it were not for the military. There is just no comparison to what a poor family faces up here in Canada from what i have seen.

Anyway, that point can be argued till the cows come home... no one has to go into the military if they don't want to... and i don't feel sorry for the soldiers in the war either... but i do support them... and i will always support the men and women in the military that do a job that quite frankly i'm glad i don't have to do and which i wouldn't want to do either... nor would i volunteer for it... which imho is even more reason to support them in what they do.

Oh incidently... it took me and my husband... ummm lets see... seven years to pay off our student loans... the only reason we were able to pay of those student loans was because my husband spent a year in Kuwait helping redesign the gas plants and refineries that Sadam Hussein blew up in '91. Ironically the sarcoidosis that has taken the sight in his right eye and will more than likely take the sight in his left eye leaving him blind is being linked to the gulf war syndrome that he suffered from for a year following his time in the gulf. When he returned the doctors felt he'd been exposed to some type of chemical nerve agent. And they don't think he has chemical weapons and used them?

"I have heard it all my life,
A voice calling a name i recognized as my own.
Sometimes it comes as a soft bellied whisper.
Sometimes it holds an edge of urgency.
But always it says:
Wake up my love.
You are walking asleep.
There's no safety in that."
