Last Night at my Parent's Place

I went to my parent's house last night. It's my mom's birthday and 4 of her good friends were throwing her a little dinner party at her house. The friends brought all the food, drink and cake etc themselves. All my parents had to do was provide the house and clean up. It's hard to believe my parent's house could look any cleaner and tidier than it usually does but somehow my mom managed it.

When we drove up.. the backyard had been transformed into f*cking Disneyland. I'm not kiddin... it was like being at the parade of lights in Disneyland... lol... ya just gotta smile and have a laugh... it's mostly all done for my kids but also nice timing for having guests too. After spending the evening in their home and what is the house i grew up in from the time i was about 13ish.... i wanted to come home throw away all my furniture... rip out all the lino and carpet... and basically gut the house and start again.

When it's dark out and all the little lights are turned on... the fire lit... candles burning... and that smell of.... rose petals? wherever you go... it is the coziest most comfortable little bungalow you could ever imagine. If only it didn't have the monster lawn to mow and the long paths to shovel snow off of i may have thought about moving back in one day.

It was kinda nice sitting around listening to them talk... like when you're a kid. I used to babysit one of the ladies' kids when i was around 14... now both boys are grown up and my husband works with her husband downtown in the oil industry. Another of the ladies... i was bestfriend's with her two kids when we were all around 13 or 14. I still call her Auntie even though we're not related. It used to be the polite way to address your parent's close friends.

I'll miss listening to people talk about having no bathrooms in their house... having to go down the back yard in the rain to the outhouse... bathing in big metal tubs in front of the fire in the kitchen... sharing the bath water with all their siblings cause it was so much trouble to heat all that water on the fire. My oldest daughter is just catching the tail end of it but soon there won't be anyone left to talk of such things.

My mom and a couple of her friends were only children so they didn't have it so bad. It's funny to hear the friend who had 11 brothers and sisters talk tho... they got dunked in what was our version of a washing machine if they happened to be about on wash day cause there were so many kids to bath and they didn't want to waste the warm water on just washing clothes. Apparently this was a rather scary experience... lol.

Well November is over... the xmas tree is half decorated... overseas xmas cards have been sent... most if not all of the kids xmas presents have been bought... present to hubbies dad is wrapped and ready to be mailed... not flippin bad since it's not December yet. Things are looking good this year. A stressfree xmas? Now that would be nice for a change. On that note i should go get a few more things done... i'd better leave the rest of the xmas tree decorating for when the kids come home from Disneyland tonight tho... i mean home from gramma and grampa's place. :P

"I have heard it all my life,
A voice calling a name i recognized as my own.
Sometimes it comes as a soft bellied whisper.
Sometimes it holds an edge of urgency.
But always it says:
Wake up my love.
You are walking asleep.
There's no safety in that."
