A friend recently pointed this article out to me. A relatively benign commentary on Canadians by an American living in Canada... but nevertheless i feel the need to comment on one or two points.
"One Toronto magazine columnist once noted to me over dinner: "While every American wants to visit Washington as a national calling, what Canadian longs to see Ottawa?"
As an American who likes Canada, and I don't know an American who doesn't, I found that comment to be really a shame and not only because I think Ottawa is a pleasant place. Disdain for politicians is one thing, but a capital city is supposed to encapsulate national identity and patriotism -- feelings that should produce pride and a deep well to draw on in times of crisis."
Well first off i think most Canadians are starting to believe there are a lot of Americans that don't like us anymore. Of course we get this feeling mostly from American politicians and journalists and not your average American who like the average Canadian is mostly concerned with their pay check and catching survivor on thursday nights. Incidently if we are judged by our politicians we are in big trouble seeing as our federal politicians are idiots... oops i digress.
Now... Ottawa... I'm sure Ottawa is a lovely place but it cannot be compared to Washington. We have completely different histories and political systems. Yes it would be nice if Ottawa weren't associated quite so closely with the liberals who have ruled Ottawa for eternity but it is. Ottawa is another word for liberal or Chretien who has done nothing but bend the west over for as long as i've lived here. All Canadians are proud to be Canadian but few western Canadians are proud of Ottawa and the liberal government it stands for. Is it a shame? Sure... i guess so... but it doesn't make us any less proud to be Canadians.
"When I make these points to Canadians I meet, some become very angry. Others nod in sad agreement, especially after Premier Ralph Klein suggested that Albertans might decide to secede if pushed too hard on Kyoto. Oil sands over country?
So what gives? I have figured out much of the arcana of Parliament. But I guess figuring out how Mr. Klein can get away with suggesting secession without stirring a national uproar is going to take me more time."
Why can Klein talk about secession? Have you ever heard of the NEP?? How would Texans feel if the American government said... gee ya know what... you're making an awful lotta money down there from that oil and those poor potatoe growers in Idaho don't make much from potatoes so we're gonna take your money and redistribute the wealth... how's that sound? What? You don't like that idea? Hmmm imagine that... oh well too bad... we don't need your votes to stay in office so f*ck you cause we're gonna do it anyway.
Heard enough whining about the NEP? Yea it is getting kinda old even though they damn near did it again recently. How about this... do you know that eastern farmers get to sell their wheat at any price to anyone they want while western farmers HAVE to sell it to the wheat board for half the price?? Western farmers recently spent some time in jail for selling their grain to the States for a decent price. Farmers all over the country are calling it quits and we force them to sell their grain for peanuts??? The west means nothing to Chretien and his liberal government.
Hang out in Alberta for a bit longer and you'll learn why Klein can get away with talking about secession. Maybe i'm in the minority... Canadians are generally a pretty laid back lot... i dunno how many would truly go for sucession in Alberta but i for one am sick of being irrelevant to Ottawa... the disparity between the east and the west is pathetic.
More on this later no doubt... gotta hit the shower. :)

"I have heard it all my life,
A voice calling a name i recognized as my own.
Sometimes it comes as a soft bellied whisper.
Sometimes it holds an edge of urgency.
But always it says:
Wake up my love.
You are walking asleep.
There's no safety in that."
